Job Description

Direct Reports: Deck Supervisors, Head Lifeguards, Lifeguards & Instructors

Job Summary: Responsible for overseeing all pool related activities and coordinate maintenance with the facility staff. Striving to maintain high quality educational programs as well as a high degree of safety in and around the pools at all times and setting goals outside the instructional program to promote increased pool usage. Your main duties and responsibilities include; training, supervising and evaluating lifeguards, swim instructors and directly supervising program delivery to ensure high product quality pool operations. Provide direction, supervision and leadership to part-time staff members while ensuring operating standards are in accordance with department policies and procedures the Ontario Health Regulations and Lifesaving Society standards.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Programming

  • Provide strong leadership and direction for the aquatic team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality aquatic programs and services lessons to all participants.
  • Passionate about working with the public and is not afraid to jump into the water when needed.
  • Develop, co-ordinate and promote seasonal water safety programs.
  • Schedule instructors for all swimming lessons and prepare appropriate staff schedules. Coordinate aquatic staff with fitness instructor supervisor.
  • Produce aquatic staff schedules as required, ensuring timely promotion of special recreation swims, programs and water slide hours for both hotel guests birthday parties and club members
  • Instruct classes, guard the pool when needed.
  • Program a minimum of one aquatics function per session, separate from the lesson program, open to all club members and hotel guests.
  • Create innovative ways to promote awareness of the Aquatics Department and its programs and implement these ideas with the approval of management.
  • Ensure proper notice is posted well in advance to inform patrons of any pool time changes to programs, recreation swims or restrictions use due to maintenance other changes to the regular scheduled program

Supervision

  • Schedule and oversee all aquatics staff.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate all aquatics staff in accordance with club philosophy, policies and procedures and Life Saving Society Standards.
  • Coordinate any maintenance needs of the pool, whirlpool, and sauna. Communicate serious concerns to the Facility Manager.
  • Act as Duty Supervisor as required for the Sports and LeisureDome.
  • Oversee lesson registration and administration with Life Saving Society and other governing bodies.
  • Flexibility to work evenings, holidays and weekends, as required
  • Promote good customer service through effective communication, be available as much as possible to staff and patrons to field questions or concerns and ensure immediate follow-up of concerns.
  • Conduct regular aquatic meetings/In service training and attend, as required, management and department meetings.
  • Train staff and co-ordinate the completion of all maintenance tasks required with pool fouling’s, water slide inspections and other pool inspections.
  • Train staff in emergency procedures.
  • Evaluate staff performance with written documentation as required.

Communication and Promotion

  • Ensure that all patrons are aware of pool and water slide usage at any given time as well as ensure reception and hotel front desk are well informed of pool functions and any changes to existing regular scheduled times.
  • Work with marketing to implement creative marketing strategies to advertise lessons and other aquatic programs increasing the profitability of the Aquatics Department. All patrons and staff must be aware of all programs offered.
  • Correspond with participants on an ongoing basis regarding concerns or suggestions about the Aquatics Department.

Administration

  • Ensure all supplies purchased for the department are approved through the manager/owner and stay within budget.
  • Ensure that staff costs are monitored accurately and remain as cost efficient as possible.
  • Survey and evaluate seasonal Aquatic programs and provide summary reports to manager.
  • Complete swim lesson documentation and order badges or qualifications to be communicated to the Red Cross and Royal Lifesaving Society.
  • Keep updated records of pool usage, stats and program attendance.
  • Complete an inventory of all aquatics supplies and report on their condition on a quarterly basis.
  • Produce weekly Aquatics staff schedules and monitor staff attendance.
  • Prepare and implement lesson prerequisite formats.
  • Produce department repair requests and concerns regarding pool, water slide, whirlpool, and sauna maintenance records.
  • Any other duties as assigned by Manager

Required Qualifications

Requirements & Specialized Skills

  • A team player with strong leadership, well developed organizational and communication skills
  • A minimum of three years teaching experience with the Red Cross /Life Saving Society Water Safety Program.
  • High degree of understanding of Ontario Public Pools Regulations.
  • Excellent public relations skills.
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word and Excel), CLASS and ADP is also required for this position.
  • Can prioritize tasks and provide quality customer service.

Education & Certification

  • National Lifeguard
  • Standard First Aid & CPR C/AED
  • Lifesaving Society Swim, Lifesaving, and Emergency First Aid Instructor
  • Lifesaving Society Bronze Examiner
  • Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Training
  • Advanced aquatic leadership certifications (such as Swim Instructor Trainer)
  • National Lifeguard Instructor/Examiner
  • Airway Management/First Aid Instructor/Examiner would be considered an asset
