BOAT Instructor

The Lifesaving Society BOAT Instructor course prepares candidates to teach the Society's Boat Operator Accredited Training course and administer and mark the required written test.

Prerequisites: Lifesaving Instructor a n d Advanced Instructor (need not be current) and Pleasure Craft Operator (PCO) certifications. (The written exam for the PCO card may be administered as part of the BOAT Instructor course.) Do you have the prerequisites to take this course?

Evaluation & certification: BOAT Instructor Trainers teach, evaluate and certify BOAT Instructor candidates. The Lifesaving Society deems its certifications to be "current" for 24 months from the certification date.

Course length: Approx. 6-9 hr. classroom instruction.

Candidate recognition: Certification card.

Required reference material: BOAT Study Guide, Stay in the Boat DVD and BOAT Instructor CD.

Costs: In addition to the required reference materials, a certification fee is payable to the Lifesaving Society. Organizers charge a fee to cover the costs of running the course.

Recertification: Instructors remain current by recertifying within 24 months of the last certification date. Recertification is through the Society's professional development credit system. Is it time to recertify?

Core Instructor Clinic

The Lifesaving Society's Core Instructor Clinic is designed for candidates who do not hold the Society's Lifesaving Instructor certification, but who are otherwise qualified to teach a non-aquatic Society course like BOAT. Candidates learn about the Lifesaving Society and its leadership system; theroles and responsibilities of Lifesaving Society instructors and examiners; class management and presentation skills.

The Core Instructor Clinic (approx. 8-10 hr.) may be offered prior to the Society's BOAT Instructor Course or integrated into it. Those who successfully complete both the Core Instructor Clinic and the BOAT Instructor Course will be certified as Lifesaving Society BOAT Instructors.

Prerequisite: Minimum 18 years of age and current PCO certification. Previous teaching experience recommended.

Evaluation & certification: Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainers teach and evaluate Core Instructor Clinic candidates.
