Job Description
Position: Swim Instructors
Status: On-Call/Part-time Contract
Reports to: Program Coordinator, Community Based Programs
Location: Variety Village, Scarborough, ON

With approximately one half of its members with a disability, Variety Village has had and continues to have a profound impact on the lives of people with disabilities and their families. Through adaptive sport and recreation programming, outreach and education, Variety promotes inclusion and healthy living through adapted physical activity. Variety Village is seeking several qualified Swim Instructors to join our team of talented staff.
Required Qualifications
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Instructing people of all abilities and ages to develop swimming skills; technique and confidence in the water;
- Developing and implementing sequential weekly lesson plans;
- Maintaining accurate participant worksheets and attendance records;
- Identifying participants’ abilities and encouraging them to reach their full potential;
- Evaluating sessions and give feedback;
- Ensuring safe provision of all equipment and ensure it is used correctly;
- Making sure safety standards are followed in sessions and undertake risk assessments;
- Adapting lessons as needed to ensure that all clients are able to participate;
- Conducting lessons with the utmost regard for safety, following required protocols and policies;
- Providing outstanding excellent customer service;
- Promoting active living opportunities for people with disabilities;
- Attending mandatory In-Service training each session;
- Ensuring qualifications and certifications as required are always current;
- Participating in AODA, Plan to Protect, and Health & Safety training and adhering to those policies and others, during employment;
- Handling other duties as assigned.
Key Competencies, Skills and Qualifications:
- 16 years of age or older
- Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED
- National Lifeguard or Bronze Cross certification
- Lifesaving Society Swim Instructors certification
- Knowledge of and respect for pool and member safety
- Experience in instructing people with disabilities an asset
- Ability to adapt activities and programming to people with disabilities
- Ability to work flexible hours
- Dependable, reliable and punctual
- Strong customer service skills
