Position Title: Camp Instructor - Swim Camp

Reports to: Camp Supervisor, Program Coordinator

Job Type: Temporary Contract, Summer

Hours: 35 hours per week

Summary:

The Swim Camp Instructor provides 1:1 or group support to campers, ensuring safe, engaging, and inclusive aquatic experiences. Working under the guidance of Head and Junior Head Instructors, the Swim Camp Instructor assists with implementing lesson plans, managing group dynamics, supporting transitions, and adapting activities to meet individual camper needs. This role requires strong communication, interpersonal skills, adaptability, and a positive, inclusive approach to supporting children and youth of all abilities in a dynamic aquatic environment.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

· Provide 1:1 or group support to campers during swim camp activities.

· Assist with the implementation of swim lesson plans developed by Head and Swim Instructors.

· Support campers in safely participating in aquatic activities and transitions on and off deck.

· Use positive behaviour-support and adaptive strategies to meet individual camper needs.

· Assist swim instructors with group management, skill practice, and engagement in the water.

· Help maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive pool deck environment.

· Participate confidently in emergency situations, including providing first aid or supervising groups as needed.

· Model positive behaviour, professionalism, and inclusive interactions at all times.

· Communicate respectfully and professionally with families and caregivers when appropriate.

· Maintain awareness of facility operations, schedules, and swim camp routines.

· Follow all Variety Village policies and procedures, including aquatic safety protocols, CPI, and Plan to Protect.

· Attend required staff meetings, training sessions, and in-services.

· Perform all duties in a safe and responsible manner.

· Complete additional related duties as assigned to support swim camp operations.

· Other duties as assigned to support departmental and organizational needs.

 

Required Qualifications

· Valid Standard First Aid with CPR-C (required)

· Lifesaving Swim Instructor, Bronze Cross, and/or National Lifeguard certification (required)

· Comfortable working in aquatic environments and supporting swim programming

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills

· Responsible, dependable, and punctual

· Positive, flexible, and proactive approach to work

· Comfortable working with participants of all abilities; experience working with individuals with disabilities is a strong asset

· Ability to think quickly and adapt in dynamic situations
