March Break Camps: March 16-20, 2020

(Seasonal Position)


Camps at Appleby College provide co-educational opportunities to develop advanced skills, and promote interactive skills among participants.  Each Appleby camp has the use of superb facilities and offers access to excellent instruction.  Our programs emphasize individual development, participation, co-operation and fun!

The Head Lifeguard for Appleby Camps is responsible for diligently monitoring the activities in the pool areas to prevent accidents and provide a safe environment to all March Break campers.  The Head Guard is responsible for providing leadership & training to the lifeguard team and is also the camp’s head First Aid Responder.


Specific Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for supervising the pool area, 1-3 lifeguards and programs
  • Ensures the safety and health of campers and staff while at the pool area
  • Follow Appleby’s Camp Lifeguarding procedures to provide a safe environment while exceeding customer service expectations.
  • Communicate regularly with the swimming staff to ensure awareness of any physical, psychological, emotional and/or medical limitations of campers and/or staff that could affect their safety in the water
  • Ensure review and practice of the emergency procedures on site by all staff both during March Break Training and daily before the swim program begins Perform assessments and classifications of the swimming ability for each swimmer’s first time at the pool during March Camp
  • Perform rescues and administer First Aid as needed
  • Assist in maintaining daily records and inspections of the pool facilities
  • Check the pool areas and all required safety equipment on a daily basis
  • Conduct swim breaks and enforce pool/Appleby policies


Workplace Requirements:

  • Successful candidates must attend the required training session in the evening on Tuesday, March 3, 2020
  • As a condition of employment, a criminal record check with a vulnerable sector screening is required


Appleby College Camps and Academies provide the highest quality of instruction to campers in a fast paced and challenging work environment.  Compensation is dependent on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Minimum 2 years desk supervisory experience an asset
  • Preference given to those applicants with previous lifeguarding experience within a camp and pool setting
  • Current Lifesaving Society Swim Instructors and/or Lifesaving Society Lifesaving Instructors/Red Cross
  • Water Safety Instructors Airway Management certification
  • Current National Lifeguard (NL)/ and or Red Cross Pool Lifeguard and in good standing with good performance record
  • Additional aquatic qualifications an asset (Pool Operator, Aquatic Safety inspector, NL Instructor, Lifesaving instructor, swim instructor, instructor trainer, or Red Cross Instructor Development Program)
  • Aquatic Supervisory Training (AST) an asset
  • Airway Management is an asset
  • Written incident/accident reports experience
  • Additional aquatic qualifications an asset
  • Must support inclusive programming
  • Preference given to those applicants with previous lifeguarding experience within a camp and pool setting
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR – C (certified on, or after Sept. 2018) is required
  • Valid National Lifeguard – Pool Certification required
