Loyalist Township is a growing community of over 18,000 residents situated on the north shore of Lake Ontario between the Town of Greater Napanee and the City of Kingston. POSITION SUMMARY:

This role is an integral part of service delivery for residents and visitors of Loyalist Township. Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator, the Head Guard is responsible for providing a safe aquatic environment and the delivery of quality pool programs, including guarding, instructing, supervising programs and on deck staff in the absence of the supervisor, and carrying out other operational duties as directed. The delivery of these programs plays a key role in building a strong community as part of the Corporate Strategic Plan by strengthening and promoting quality of life, health and wellbeing.

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Provide a fun and safe aquatic environment for patrons.

· Demonstrate exceptional customer service.

· Enforce pool rules and policies in a polite and professional manner.

· Ensure that all equipment is in working order, in place and that the proper guarding positions are taken before patrons enter the water.

· Report any broken or damaged equipment to the supervisor, clean equipment, and perform maintenance tasks such as keeping the deck tidy and organized when not guarding or instructing.

· Maintain order and discipline in all areas by continually monitoring the pool area and periodically checking the change rooms. This includes enforcing pool rules and policies in a polite and professional manner.

· Verify that aquatic staff have completed all necessary checklists and daily documentation including but not limited to opening/closing checklists, equipment maintenance logs, and rescue logs.

· Review and approve instructor report cards at the end of each lesson session.

· Provide direct supervision and leadership support to aquatic staff and patrons in the absence of the supervisor.

· Complete administrative tasks such as accident/incident reports, daily Head Guard shift logs, and daily communications updates to the supervisor.

· Respond to all emergencies, incidents, and events in the Aquatic facility according to your certification standard and legislative requirements.

· Attend and assist in leading in-service training sessions.

· Work as part of a team; communicate effectively with staff, volunteers, and patrons in all situations.

· Other duties as assigned.

*Note: All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs.  In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

Required Qualifications

Education

· *National Lifeguard Award.

· *Lifesaving Society Swimming Instructor

· *Standard First Aid with CPR C (minimum) from WSIB recognized certifying body.

· Lifesaving Society Aquatic Supervisor Training

*Qualifications must be kept current.

Experience

· Previous customer service experience

· Two years experience working in aquatics as a lifeguard and program instructor/coach

Knowledge/Skill/Ability

· Exhibit outstanding public relations skills in all interactions.

· Passionate about providing exceptional customer service experiences.

· Highly self motivated and able to work independently in a team environment with a demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships.

· Ability to take initiative and complete work in a detail oriented and timely manner.

· Ability to effectively multi-task

· Ability to make quick decisions

· Ability to command authority when providing direction to patrons

· Ability to demonstrate skill in mentoring and supporting skill development amongst the staff they are supervising

· Ability to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.

Other Requirements

· Reliable transportation

Internal

Other aquatics staff, Facility Operators, other recreation team members.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

· Indoor pool environment

· Exposure to noise (patrons, whistles)

· Exposure to chemicals used in the pool

· Heat & humidity of pool environment

· Must be able to stand/walk on pool desk for prolonged periods

· Constant visual awareness of surroundings.

· Lift Weight: must be able to bring an unconscious person from the bottom of the pool to the surface/edge and remove a person from the pool (50+kgs); Carrying equipment (<50kgs)
