Job Description
The Lifesaving Society is a national volunteer organization and registered charity. We are a full‐ service provider of programs, products and services designed to prevent drowning. We save lives and prevent water‐related injury through our training programs, Water Smart public edu-cation, drowning research, aquatic safety management and lifesaving sport.
The Lifesaving Society Ontario Branch is seeking applications for volunteer National Trainers. Applying is the first step in a multi-stage appointment process. Please refer to the "Process" section for more details.
Purpose: National Trainers are primarily responsible for preparing candidates to assume a leadership role as Lifesaving Society Trainers.
Appointment: Appointed as a National Trainer for a two-year term; may be re-appointed for additional two-year terms thereafter.
Reporting Relationship: To Lifesaving Society via Leadership Council.
Responsibilities:
1. Represent the Lifesaving Society in a professional and ethical manner and act in the best interests of the Society.
2. Deliver Trainer courses on an ongoing basis and Trainer Update Clinics as required.
- Teach and evaluate in accordance with policies, procedures and standards of the Society’s leadership system and Volunteer Code of Conduct.
- Decide whether candidates pass the Trainer course.
- Prepare individual development plans for candidates, and provide ongoing ad-vice and guidance as needed.
- Complete all administrative requirements including Master Sheets and Training Records in a timely manner.
3. Provide professional development opportunities and guidance for new National Trainers as assigned.
4. Attend National Trainer workshops as required.
5. Act as expert resources in matters related to learning, teaching, evaluating, and mentor-ing within the Society’s leadership training system.
6. Provide input to the Lifesaving Society on program design and actively promote Society programs.
7. Assure the quality and integrity of the Society’s leadership training programs through expertise in learning, teaching, evaluation, and mentoring.
8. Assist in the identification, recruitment and development of new Trainers.
9. Participate in Certification Reviews as needed.
Required Qualifications
Skills and Experience:
- Must be a member in good standing of the Lifesaving Society (no discipline on file).
- Must be an experienced and active Trainer in Ontario.
- Current Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer certification in a minimum of 1 stream; Swim, Lifesaving, First Aid, National Lifeguard, Management Training, Lifesaving Sport.
- Taught at least 4 Instructor courses in the last 2 years – 2 of which must be instructor courses with apprentices.
- Positive recommendation from a current National Trainer.
- 2 years’ experience in adult facilitation (recommended).
- Post-secondary education (recommended).
Conflict of Interest:
Individuals who are officers or senior representatives of organizations or agencies that offer programs that compete with those of the Lifesaving Society are not eligible for appointment as a National Trainer.

Curriculum Knowledge -Synthesizes broad resources to support program development and implementation of initiatives at all levels.
People Focus -Designs age-appropriate programs and applies learning theories to foster development and understanding across the program.
Health and Safety -Analyzes accidents through investigation, interviews, and risk assessments to promote a healthy and safe environment and prevent further safety concerns.
Facilitating and Mentoring -Fosters learning and growth by encouraging reflection, inquiry, and professional development.
Ethics and Valuing Diversity -Promotes inclusion, ethical decision-making, and awareness of social schemas to enhance organizational success.
Communicating -Builds respectful, strategic communication networks that align with Lifesaving Society goals.
Teamwork and Collaborating -Drives collaboration across stakeholders by challenging norms and supporting initiatives at all organizational levels.
Problem Solving and Decision Making -Anticipates long-term impacts and adapts instructional strategies while addressing organizational challenges collaboratively.
Process:
We thank all applicants for their submissions. Screening will be based on meeting the minimum required skills and experience and will also consider geographic location to ensure representation across the province. Only those selected to move forward to the interview stage will be contacted.
Candidates who pass the interview will be invited to attend a National Trainer Course. Upon passing the course, one must then successfully apprentice on a Trainer Course with a current National Trainer to complete the appointment process.
