Job Description

The Town of East Gwillimbury is currently searching for enthusiastic and dedicated Lifeguards. The Lifeguard ensures consistent safety through vigilant monitoring, emergency response techniques, performing routine maintenance, and supporting staff and volunteers. Reporting to the Aquatics Coordinator and under the supervision of the Head Instructor Guards within the Parks, Recreation and Culture Division, this role fosters a secure, inclusive, and engaging experience for all facility patrons. Daytime, evening and weekend shifts are available.

Supervise participants, volunteers, pool and deck area to the standard set by Ministry of Health, Lifesaving Society and the Town of East Gwillimbury.

• Implement and perform proper rescue techniques and emergency procedures for individuals requiring assistance due to difficulty, danger, or injury, and manage any situation or emergency until fully resolved, ensuring effective communication and adherence to Aquatic Procedures.

• Report all concerns, accidents and incidents to the Head Instructor Guard and/or Aquatics Coordinator for follow-up and take appropriate action(s).

• Maintain a friendly, inclusive, accessible, and engaging aquatic environment.

• Perform minor equipment and pool area maintenance including set-up and clean-up of pool, pool deck and changeroom area, instructional and aquatic safety equipment is stored safely in designated areas.

• Communicate with staff and the public; provide excellent customer service, receive program feedback in a professional manner and greet members of the public.

• Perform other related duties assigned by Head Instructor Guard or Aquatics Coordinator.

• Understand, adhere to, and enforce Corporate Policies, Confidentiality Guidelines, Emergency Procedures and Health and Safety Standards for all participants and staff, including Aquatic Procedures, Ratios, Lane Swim Guidelines, Admission Standards, etc.

• Perform minor equipment and pool area maintenance including set-up and clean-up of pool, pool deck and changeroom area. Ensure instructional and aquatic safety equipment is stored safely in designated areas.

• Attend regularly scheduled in-service training programs and meetings, maintain certifications, skills and fitness levels.

• Perform other duties as assigned in accordance with departmental guidelines.

• Staff must be proficient in National Lifeguard physical standards and rescue skills, with the ability to adapt techniques to meet specific facility requirements.

*Note: All work activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety Policies and Procedures.  In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be at least 15 years of age.
  • Current Lifesaving Society's National Lifeguard Pool Certification.
  • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR-C Certification (from Lifesaving Society, Red Cross, Canadian Ski Patrol or St. John’s Ambulance).
  • Additional instructor Certification (Considered an asset).
  • High Five: Principles of Healthy Child Development (Considered an asset).
  • Experience within Aquatics, Recreation and Leisure or a related field (Considered an asset).
  • Reliable, positive and responsible attitude.
  • Ability to deal effectively and politely with staff, parents, program participants and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
  • Due to the nature of the contacts of this position a Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) satisfactory to the Town (Those 17 Years & Older) or the completion of Declaration of Minors – Working with Vulnerable Individuals Self Declaration Form (Those 16 Years and Younger) is required.
