Job Description

Position: Swim Instructors

Status: On-Call/Part-time Contract

Start date: Expected to begin in Fall

Reports to: Program Coordinator, Community Based Programs

Location: Variety Village, Scarborough, ON

Rate of Pay: $21.50 per hour

Summary:

The Swim Instructor is responsible for planning and delivering safe, inclusive, supportive swimming lessons to individuals and groups of various ages, abilities and skill levels and adhering to all water safety protocols and organization policies and procedures. This role promotes water safety, skill-building, and confidence in aquatic environments while ensuring a positive and respectful experience for all participants.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan and deliver adaptive swim lessons tailored to the needs, abilities, and goals of participants with various ages, abilities and skill levels.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment in and around the water.
  • Developing and implementing weekly lesson plans;
  • Maintain open, professional communication with caregivers, support staff, and other team members.
  • Track participant progress and complete documentation such as worksheets and attendance records.
  • Ensuring safe provision of all equipment and ensure it is used correctly;
  • Making sure safety standards are followed in sessions and undertake risk assessments;
  • Conducting lessons with the utmost regard for safety, following required protocols and policies;
  • Providing outstanding excellent customer service;
  • Promoting active living opportunities for people with disabilities;
  • Attending mandatory In-Service training each session;
  • Ensuring qualifications and certifications as required are always current;
  • Participating in in Aquatics In-service training and adhering to organizational policies and procedures.
  • Handling other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Current standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED Certification
  • Swim Instructors and/or Coaching Certifications (e.g. Lifesaving society)
  • Lifeguard certification
  • Knowledge of and respect for pool and member safety
  • Knowledge of swimming techniques, safety protocols, and age-appropriate instructional methods
  • Experience in instructing and ability to adapt activities and programming to people with disabilities
  • Dependable, reliable and punctual
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and motivational skills
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, or holidays based on program needs.
