Job Description
Camp Kandalore is seeking a positive, adaptable and detail-oriented Head of Waterfront - Program Manager to oversee and manage waterfront activity areas within its in-camp program, and support with special events.
The successful applicant will work to facilitate impactful experiences for our campers, specifically through our water attractions, sailing, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboard (SUP) and kayak activities. This individual will be directly responsible for the safety, enjoyment and learning of all campers at each of these activities and management of teams of their counsellors/activity staff. This individual will be enthusiastic, camper-centric, team-oriented and able to cope with a busy camp atmosphere.
Our Head of Waterfront will be responsible for the enforcement of all waterfront safety policies and procedures in accordance with Ontario Camps Association and Lifesaving Society Standards. Communication is a crucial aspect of this role. Duties include assessing and managing risk, facilitating outdoor educational programming, developing skill-based lessons and calendars, ensuring a culture of safety and inclusivity, managing behavioral issues, and mentoring staff and campers.
Responsibilities Include:
- Manage the waterfront program in partnership with the Heads of Canoe, Swim and Waterski. Specifically oversee four water attractions, sailing, snorkeling, stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and kayaking.
- Ensure the enforcement of all safety policies and procedures for all water activities.
- Supervise and support the waterfront staff, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and ratios are met for all swim and waterfront activities, including evening programs. Be present for any evening waterfront programs.
- Lead the teaching and execution of Waterfront Emergency Procedures.
- Plan and facilitate appropriate lesson plans for all campers, including support for advanced certifications such as Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross classes/examinations.
- Work with the Head of Swim to create a swim test schedule for the first day of each session and organize the free swim guard duty schedule, ensuring the presence of senior staff and qualified lifeguards.
- Maintain and manage all waterfront equipment, ensuring that lifeguarding tools and watercraft are functional, in good repair, and meet safety requirements. This includes daily checks and tasks like cleaning, inflating, and securing appropriate supplies.
- Ensure program inventory and equipment needs are regularly monitored and fulfilled.
- Support the overall waterfront program by creating lesson calendars, tracking camper progress, and completing report cards at the end of each session.
- Provide ongoing feedback to waterfront staff, conduct informal reviews, and facilitate bi-weekly evaluations, ensuring a high standard of instruction and safety.
- Participate in additional camp duties such as supervision during camper down times (rest hour, free time, evenings) and supporting special programs or camp-wide events as needed.
- Actively contribute to the overall camp life by participating in camp events and fostering a positive, engaging environment.
Required Qualifications
- National Lifeguard – Pool is mandatory, National Lifeguard – Waterfront preferred
- Standard First Aid and CPR-C
- Swimming Instructors Certification preferred
- Lifesaving Instructors Certification preferred
- Experience working with children
- Pleasure Craft Operator Card and experience driving boats preferred
