Job Description

Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities

The Camp Counsellor, Lifeguard will hold guest experience and safety as the highest priority, while providing accessible recreational opportunities for guests (children, youth, adults, seniors and families). The Camp Counsellor, Lifeguard will support all waterfront programming and the facilitation of these programs. The Camp Counsellor, Lifeguard will also support other program areas as scheduled by the leadership team.

Essential Functions

The position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:

  • Safely support the lifeguarding of our waterfront and boating programs, including active supervision of their assigned area.
  • Ensure guest safety by adhering to CNIB Lake Joe waterfront procedures, and the standards of the Lifesaving Society, Ontario Camping Association and Public Health.
  • Facilitate swim tests on the first day of each session and assess the guests’ swimming skills in order to assign an appropriate swim bracelet.
  • Energetically and inclusively facilitate and support waterfront and non-waterfront programming, as assigned, and adapt programs so that they are accessible for all participants.
  • Participate in the facilitation of programs aside from waterfront as scheduled by the leadership team.
  • Assist guests by taking an active role in all dining room duties, including serving meals, meal set up and clean up.
  • Provide support, guidance and leadership to volunteers, guests, and visitors.
  • Set up the assigned program area and ensure that all required equipment and materials are available. Clean up the program after the program is completed. Report any low materials or issues with equipment to the appropriate program head.
  • Fill out the daily opening and closing logs for the waterfront and ensure that all safety equipment is present and in working order.
  • On a rotational basis, be part of the emergency response team, which includes being on call, present on site and available to respond to emergencies.
  • Promote and encourage participation in programs through endorsement of activities to guests.
  • Maintain documentation of any accidents or incidents and provide this documentation to the appropriate leadership member.
  • During youth weeks: Camp counsellors will be responsible for the health and safety of campers while in our care. This will include being on call (on rotation) overnight within the cabin in case of emergencies. Camp counsellors will be assigned to a camper group and as a team, will be responsible for ensuring the overall mental, physical and emotional well-being of campers.
  • During the spring season: Setting up program areas and ensuring that all required resources are available and helping with small maintenance tasks.
  • Work as a team member, taking on other areas of responsibility as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

  • Strong interpersonal skills, including patience, empathy and communication.
  • Current National Lifeguard certification required (Waterfront National Lifeguard an asset).
  • Current (within 6 months of start date) Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check.
  • Current Standard First Aid and CPR “C”.
  • PCO (Pleasure Craft Operator) card, or willingness to obtain.
  • Ability to work flexible hours in a changing and busy environment and work outside for extended period of time.
  • Accommodations are available on site – must be willing to share accommodations with other staff members and have shared washrooms.

Experience and Education

  • Experience in camp or other recreation programs.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor work required in this position. Working outdoors may include exposure to weather, sun and heat exposure. May require moderate levels of physical exertion.
  • Respects the importance of confidential information while effectively functioning as a team member or working independently.
  • This position may require the ability to work occasional overtime/flex time.
  • Ability to work flexible hours in a dynamic and busy environment, with frequent interruptions.
  • Must reside at CNIB Lake Joe during operational season and be willing to share accommodations with other staff member.
