Airway Management

Airway Management certification provides senior and experienced lifeguards with specific knowledge and training in the use of oxygen, suction devices, oral airways and bag-valve-masks.

Prerequisite: Lifesaving Society Intermediate First Aid or a previous Standard First Aid from the Society or another approved training agency.

Instruction & certification: Current First Aid Instructors who hold Lifesaving Society Airway Management teach Airway Management. Current First Aid Examiners who hold Lifesaving Society Airway Management certify candidates.

First Aid - BVM

AT-A-GLANCE

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the:
    • principles of respiration and circulation
    • importance and application of universal precautions and use of barrier devices
    • purpose and use of oropharyngeal airways
    • principles and practical application of oxygen supplementation
    • purpose and use of manual suction
  2. Demonstrate the proper use and application of at least one barrier device during the delivery of artificial respiration.
  3. On a manikin, demonstrate the proper sizing, insertion, and follow-up for the use of an oropharyngeal airway.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of the components and proper usage, including safety factors, of nasal cannula, face mask, non-breathing mask, pocket mask, and bag-valve-mask delivery systems.
  5. Demonstrate the application of an oxygen delivery system to a person in need of supplemental oxygen.
  6. Demonstrate the proper use and application of a manual suction device in the treatment of a person who is vomiting or who has fluid in the upper airway.
  7. Demonstrate use of a bag-valve-mask (BVM).
